Background

Google Travel is a web platform for travelers to discover trip information and add into a trip plan.

It contains the powerful searching engine from google to recommend best sights and calculate travel time.

Problem

Current Google Travel only support individual trip planning. And many users complains...

Therefore, our team is passionate to redesign Google Travel to a platform where users can plan group trip easily.

Current user flow
01 - Research

Who are the target users for group trip planning?

According to the interview and research, the user profile who would need the collaboration feature can be briefly classified into two groups:
- Trip planner (manage all the details)
- Follower (have the access to the plan and comment opinions)

What issues are users facing while planning a group trip?

For the user research, we conducted 10 interviews on users who often have group trips. We summarized their behavior while planning a trip using affinity walls to find the pain points.

We find the biggest needs of ...

- Gather all travel information efficiently.
- Gather everyone’s opinions to evaluate final decision.

02 - Define

How might we simplify the flow to discover and add new sight & help users make final decisions while planning trips?

1. Combine “discover sight” with existing pages
2. Add comment/vote function to gather/express different opinions

We follow our design principles while designing

In order to keep material design rules and current Google Travel design language while improving the functionality, our design principles would be:

- Consistency
- Scalability
- Simplicity

03 - Solution Part 1

New discover sight feature

In order to help users gather travel information, we proposed to combine “discover sight” with existing pages to simplify user flow.

New user flow for sight discovering

With the new feature, we defined the new user flow.

Vote and comment features

In order to support multiple users, we added vote and comment feature for team work.

1. WHO bookmarked the places

Showing users who add the place can help telling planners about the opinions. Users can ask specific people regarding their opinion.

2. HOW MANY teammates want to go this place

Showing users how many people add the same place can help the planner to decide. If multiple users added same places, it probably means people want to go here.

3. WHAT do teammates think about this place

This part helps followers to leave their comments for planners to decide and follow up.

Takeaways

1. Be decisive and focus more on the solution.

We have spent more than a week on validating whether it is necessary to add a group travel planning feature. But honestly any one of the method we use can tell the need for this feature. But we were not confident enough and wasted time. Instead, we should spend more time to research the solution for how to add the group travel planning feature.

2. Stay focused within scope.

We have also thought about whether Google Travel should have a better recommending system to improve the efficiency of planning a trip. But that is not within the scope of “planning a trip with teammates”. So we have wasted some time on it.
